Quick answer

An Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and linked to your PAN. Businesses need it to import or export goods, and to claim export benefits. You apply online with a government fee of ₹500, and the code is valid for life.

Overview

What you need to know about IEC Code Registration (Import Export Code)

An Importer Exporter Code, or IEC, is issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade under the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992 and the foreign trade framework. It is generally required for commercial imports or exports of goods unless an exemption applies.

IEC is PAN-based and is applied for through the DGFT online process using ANF-2A particulars. One IEC is generally issued against one PAN, with branches and relevant business details maintained under that record.

IEC details must be updated or confirmed electronically each year during April–June, even if nothing has changed. The service covers application preparation, document checks and guidance on annual confirmation; product-specific permissions remain separate.

Is this for you?

Who needs this and when

Any person or business that wants to import goods into India or export goods from India generally needs an IEC. This includes proprietors, partnership firms, LLPs, companies, trusts and HUFs. Customs, banks and courier companies ask for it when you clear shipments or receive foreign payments for goods.

There are exceptions. Some imports for personal use do not need an IEC, and service exporters generally do not need one to export services, although many take one to claim benefits. Check the rules for your products, since some goods are restricted or need extra licences. The code is linked to your PAN, and each PAN can have only one IEC.

Avoid delays

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying with a bank account that is not in the business name. DGFT usually asks for a cancelled cheque or bank certificate matching the applicant’s name.
  • Using details that do not match the PAN record. Differences in name, date of incorporation or address can lead to rejection.
  • Forgetting the annual update. An IEC that is not updated can be deactivated, which can hold up customs clearance.
  • Assuming the IEC lets you trade in any item. Restricted, prohibited or licensed goods still need separate permissions.
  • Not registering with the relevant export promotion council or other bodies when you need them for certain benefits or products.

Next steps

After it’s done: staying compliant

After you get your IEC, open or link an authorised dealer bank account for foreign remittances and set up your customs registration. Quote the IEC on your shipping bills, invoices and bills of entry. Learn the HS code for your product, since it decides duties, export incentives and any restrictions.

Update the IEC details on the DGFT portal every year, and tell DGFT if your address, bank or signatory changes. Keep copies of your export documents, bank realisation certificates and invoices. Think about the schemes that apply to you, such as RoDTEP or duty drawback, and check the conditions before you claim.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can a sole proprietor obtain an IEC?

Yes. A proprietor can apply using the proprietor’s PAN and appropriate business and bank details. A separate company is not required merely to obtain an IEC.

Is IEC compulsory for every service export?

Not necessarily. For services or technology, IEC is generally required when claiming benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy or dealing in specified services or technologies. GST, banking and other requirements still need separate review.

Does IEC expire every year?

IEC is not ordinarily renewed as a fresh licence each year, but its particulars must be updated or confirmed during April–June. Failure to do so can lead to deactivation until the required update is completed.

Can one PAN have several IECs?

Generally, only one IEC is issued against a PAN. Different branches should normally be reflected in the same IEC record rather than through duplicate applications.

Why might my application be delayed?

PAN or name mismatches, incomplete address evidence, bank validation issues and authentication problems can cause delays. A clarification response may be necessary; issuance timing is not guaranteed.

Does IEC permit import of any product?

No. Restricted goods may require authorisation, and food, drugs, plants, chemicals or other regulated products can require additional approvals. IEC does not replace customs, product safety or sector-specific compliance.
