Quick answer

Section 80C deductions can reduce eligible individuals’ and HUFs’ taxable income by up to ₹1.5 lakh under the old tax regime for FY 2025-26. The limit is shared with sections 80CCC and 80CCD(1). These deductions are generally unavailable under the default new regime, so compare complete tax calculations before investing.

Start with the financial year and your tax regime

This guide covers payments made from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026, relevant to assessment year 2026-27. It uses the Income-tax Act, 1961 section numbers applicable to that period. Publication in October 2026 does not turn a later investment into a payment for FY 2025-26. Always match the receipt date and financial year before entering a deduction in your return.

The new tax regime is the default regime. Section 80C relief normally requires a valid choice of the old regime. Employees should not assume that submitting investment proofs to payroll permanently determines their return position. Taxpayers without business income can generally choose their regime annually through a timely return. Business and professional taxpayers face additional option requirements, including Form 10-IEA where applicable, and restrictions on switching.

The Finance Act 2025 changed new-regime slabs and the section 87A rebate; it did not increase the section 80C ceiling. A deduction that sounds attractive in isolation may still leave the old regime more expensive overall. Start with both calculations rather than a product advertisement.

Understand the shared ceiling before adding investments

Section 80C has a maximum deduction of ₹1,50,000. Section 80CCE places a combined ₹1,50,000 ceiling on deductions under sections 80C, 80CCC and 80CCD(1). Consequently, a pension contribution covered by one of those provisions does not automatically create another full deduction above your existing 80C claim. Classify each payment before calculating the unused balance.

Suppose Meera contributes ₹72,000 to recognised employee provident fund, pays ₹48,000 of eligible school tuition and deposits ₹50,000 into PPF. Her qualifying payments total ₹1,70,000, but the deduction is capped at ₹1,50,000. The extra ₹20,000 does not become a carry-forward deduction for the next year. It may remain a sensible investment, but it provides no additional 80C relief for this year.

Separate provisions can offer separate deductions where their conditions are satisfied. For example, eligible additional NPS contributions under section 80CCD(1B) have a distinct ₹50,000 limit under the old regime. Never claim the same contribution twice. Health insurance belongs under section 80D, not section 80C.

Check the main eligible investment categories

Common qualifying categories include employee contributions to recognised provident funds, PPF deposits, specified life insurance premiums, ELSS investments, NSC subscriptions, eligible five-year tax-saving bank deposits and qualifying Senior Citizens Savings Scheme deposits. Eligibility depends on the statutory category and product terms, not on an investment being described casually as safe or long term.

An ordinary bank fixed deposit does not qualify merely because you intend to keep it for five years. Confirm that it is the notified tax-saving deposit. Similarly, a general equity mutual fund is not automatically an ELSS fund. Keep the scheme name, folio or deposit number, payment date and transaction acknowledgement. Match the actual amount invested rather than a proposed SIP schedule.

Do not choose between products solely by the deduction. Compare liquidity, market risk, interest taxation, lock-in and your emergency reserve. The tax treatment of contributions, annual earnings and withdrawal can differ. A qualifying deduction at entry is not a promise that every future receipt will be exempt. Ask for the applicable scheme rules before committing money you may need soon.

Life insurance, tuition and family payment conditions

For individuals, eligible life insurance premiums may relate to the taxpayer, spouse or children, subject to statutory conditions. A premium paid for a parent does not become an 80C deduction merely because the parent is financially dependent. Policy issue dates and premium-to-sum-assured limits matter; for many policies issued from 1 April 2012, the relevant general limit is 10% of actual capital sum assured, with specified exceptions.

Tuition fees can qualify for full-time education of up to two children at an educational institution situated in India. The qualifying component is tuition, not the entire school invoice. Development fees, donations and similar charges are excluded. Ask the institution for a breakup instead of claiming transport, meals, uniforms and activity charges under the tuition label.

If a receipt shows ₹80,000 comprising ₹55,000 tuition, ₹15,000 transport and ₹10,000 development charges, start with ₹55,000 as the potentially eligible amount. Check who actually paid and whether the child limit is satisfied. Parents should coordinate claims so that the same payment is not deducted twice in separate returns.

Housing principal is different from housing interest

Eligible repayment of housing loan principal can fall within section 80C, subject to the statutory conditions concerning the property and lender. Interest is a separate question governed by other provisions. Your EMI contains both components, so entering the entire annual EMI as principal overstates the deduction. Obtain the lender’s annual principal-and-interest certificate and reconcile it with actual payments.

Certain stamp duty, registration fees and other qualifying transfer expenses for a residential house may also fall within 80C in the year paid. Do not assume all property-related costs qualify. Brokerage, renovation expenditure and an advance towards an unfinished purchase require separate examination rather than automatic inclusion in a housing deduction worksheet.

There are clawback provisions. Transfer of a house before the specified five-year period measured from the end of the financial year of possession can reverse earlier housing deductions. If you plan an early sale, ask your adviser to calculate that consequence alongside capital gains. Retain the possession record, loan certificate, deed and historical deduction workings so the reversal question can be checked accurately.

Calculate actual savings and compare the new regime

A deduction reduces taxable income, not tax rupee for rupee. If the entire ₹1,50,000 deduction reduces income otherwise taxed at 30%, the base tax saving is ₹45,000. Including 4% health and education cess, that becomes ₹46,800, assuming no surcharge, rebate interaction or slab crossing. The saving can be smaller at lower marginal rates or where the deduction spans different slabs.

For FY 2025-26, the new regime has nil tax up to ₹4 lakh and successive ₹4 lakh bands taxed at 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25%, with 30% above ₹24 lakh. Eligible resident individuals with total income up to ₹12 lakh can receive a section 87A rebate up to ₹60,000, subject to the special-rate income restriction. That is not an exemption for every category of income.

For example, an eligible resident salaried person with ₹12,75,000 salary and no other income can reach ₹12 lakh after the ₹75,000 new-regime standard deduction. The rebate can eliminate ordinary slab tax. Buying an unsuitable product solely for old-regime 80C relief would therefore be a poor starting point.

Build a deduction file and reconcile the return

Create one worksheet with columns for payment date, payer, beneficiary, product, qualifying amount and supporting document. Add provident fund contributions already deducted from salary before buying anything else. A person with substantial EPF and eligible tuition payments may already have exhausted the ceiling without a separate March investment. Track the actual annual figures rather than estimating from one payslip.

Keep policy schedules, premium receipts, fund statements, tuition receipts and housing certificates. Although ordinary online return filing does not require attaching all these documents, you should be able to produce them if a claim is questioned. Record exclusions clearly, such as the non-tuition portion of a school bill or the interest portion of an EMI.

Check that the return uses the intended regime and that the deduction appears in the correct schedule. Payroll may have ignored late proof or used a different projection. Conversely, employer acceptance does not legalise an ineligible claim. Reconcile Form 16, the deduction worksheet and the final computation before verification, and retain the acknowledgement with your evidence folder.

Avoid rushed corrections and get targeted help

If a claim is missing or excessive, identify whether the return can still be revised under the applicable deadline and circumstances. A rectification request is meant for mistakes apparent from the record, not every fresh deduction or disputed factual claim. An updated return is not a general route to reduce tax or obtain a larger refund. Choose the remedy after reviewing the actual filing history.

For business owners, regime selection and the timing of the option can be more important than the investment amount. For families with property sales, capital gains and other special-rate income can also change the comparison. Provide the adviser with all income categories, not only salary and an investment receipt. Ask for a written old-versus-new computation and a list of assumptions.

Before instructing a professional, collect the return, Form 16, payment evidence and any portal communication. The practical objective is a supportable deduction and correct overall tax, not simply reaching ₹1.5 lakh because a checklist or salesperson says you should.

Frequently asked questions

Did Budget 2025 increase the 80C limit?

No. The FY 2025-26 ceiling remains ₹1,50,000, shared with sections 80CCC and 80CCD(1). Finance Act 2025 changed the new-regime tax structure and rebate. Do not confuse those changes with an additional old-regime investment deduction.

Can I claim 80C under the new regime?

Generally no. Standard section 80C deductions are unavailable under section 115BAC. Some other deductions have their own rules, but they do not make 80C available. Compare the total tax under both regimes before deciding whether an eligible old-regime option is worthwhile.

Does my employer’s PF contribution use my 80C limit?

Your eligible employee contribution is the usual 80C item. Do not add employer contributions as though you personally invested that amount. Employer contributions and their tax treatment require a separate analysis; use the payroll breakup rather than the combined provident fund credit.

Can both parents claim the same tuition payment?

No duplicate deduction should be claimed for the same payment. Each claimant must satisfy the payment and eligibility conditions, including the two-child restriction applicable to an individual. Keep receipts and banking evidence that establish which parent paid the qualifying tuition component.

Can I invest after 31 March and claim for FY 2025-26?

A later payment ordinarily belongs to the later financial year, not FY 2025-26. An October 2026 filing or correction does not change when you invested. Use payment evidence and the relevant statutory rules, and never backdate receipts to fill an unused deduction limit.
