Cyber Fraud: What to Do in the First Hour (Call 1930)

Lost money to UPI, card or online fraud? Call 1930, report on cybercrime.gov.in, inform your bank within 3 working days and preserve evidence.

Reviewed against official texts · Last updated October 2026

Do this now

  • Call 1930 immediately (National Cyber Crime Helpline)
  • Report on cybercrime.gov.in
  • Block card/UPI and inform your bank in writing
  1. Step 1: First hour: call 1930

The helpline routes your complaint to banks and wallets through the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System so the money can be put on hold before it is withdrawn. Speed matters more than anything else.

  2. Step 2: Register online

File the complaint on cybercrime.gov.in under "Report Other Cyber Crime" with transaction IDs, UTR numbers, screenshots and the fraudster’s number or UPI ID. Note the acknowledgement number.

  3. Step 3: Notify your bank within 3 working days

Under RBI’s circular on limiting customer liability in unauthorised electronic transactions (6 July 2017), if a third-party fraud is reported within 3 working days and you were not negligent, your liability is zero. Reporting in 4–7 working days caps liability; beyond that the bank’s board policy applies. Report in writing and keep proof.

  4. Step 4: Preserve evidence

Do not delete chats, call logs, SMS or emails. Take screenshots with dates. Under Section 63 Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, electronic records produced in court need a certificate, so keep the original device.

  5. Step 5: FIR and escalation

Ask for an FIR at the cyber police station; cheating is Section 318 BNS and identity theft/impersonation is Sections 66C and 66D of the IT Act. If the bank does not resolve within 30 days, complain to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.

Documents to keep ready

  • Bank statement showing the debit
  • Transaction IDs / UTR numbers
  • Screenshots of messages and the fraudster’s profile
  • Acknowledgement from 1930 / cybercrime.gov.in
